During May 2008 (Museums and Galleries month)
I worked as Artist in Residence at Plas Newydd, Llangollen www.llangollen.com
The journals and notebooks kept by Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah
Ponsonby in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century
are full of curious, interesting and often amusing observations
about their life together at Plas Newydd.
It is part of my professional practice as an artist to keep a
sketch book diary, so for my month long residency it seemed a
natural choice to create a diary for my project. Drawing from
what I saw around me and relating my observations to the Ladies'
writings I was able to make visual and written connections between
then and now.
This idea was continued into the schools'
activities. The pupils
from several schools in Denbighshire looked at historical and
contemporary examples of diaries, published and handmade. They
explored the idea of illustration as a means of communication
and enjoyed a hands-on art experience, producing diary pages
based on their own daily lives or looking through the eyes of
the Ladies, their servants or even their animals.
To celebrate Plas Newydd's seventy fifth year of being open to
the public I created a piece of artwork consisting of seventy-five
drawings, original artwork supplemented with scans from the sketch
book diary and extracts from the Ladies' journals. I documented
(via drawings) all the previous Artists in Residence artworks
and included them in the commemorative artwork.
A limited edition giclee print is available for £75.00
(signed edition of 75)
Artwork from the residency was on show during the Llangollen
Fringe Festival, at Y Capel, Llangollen 17 July - 27 July www.llangollenfringe.co.uk
2008 was Cheshire's Year of the Garden and CAN
(Cheshire Artists Network) artists participated in
various exhibitions
and events. My work has been included in Art in Gardens at Warrington
Museum and Art Gallery, Treasures in the Garden at Grosvenor
Museum, Chester and the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. Community
projects included the Anderton River and Canal Festival,
Lache Community Fun Day and OneEarth Day, Chester.

During the summer I led a series of workshops at Bodelwyddan
Castle to inspire adult learners in north Wales to be creative.
Taking their inspiration from the castle’s collections,
various groups including Women’s Aid and community college
groups produced delightful pieces of work using my printing press,
resulting in a publication about the event to mark their achievements. ‘Inspired

of ‘Spinning a Yarn’ an exhibition of 20 drawings
illustrating the silk moth's lifecycle, a project supported by

Printfest
www.printfest.org.uk
This was my fourth attendance at this art fair that shows works
from approximately thirty printmakers across the UK.
All the work was for sale, along with delicious lunches, teas
and other refreshments. From an artist's point of view this is
one of the highlights in the year. It's a chance to meet up again
with a bunch of lovely people, sell work and get a chance to
enjoy a beautiful part of the world for a few days.
My solo show ‘all things bright and beautiful’ at
Manorhaus (boutique rooms, restaurant and gallery) was well received,
a chance to showcase new works including Bluebells based on studies
from my friend Karol’s beautiful bluebell wood. The Princess
and the Pea bedroom, featuring my paintings is proving to be
a popular booking
