The Twilight Zone at Chester
Zoo quickly became my favourite place.
I would take my sketchbook in to the bats habitat around
the time in the morning when the light levels were changing and
before the visitors arrived. I soon became used to drawing in semi
darkness and enjoyed the challenge of recording the ever changing
silhouettes of the bats with swift sketches.
Back in my studio these drawings would be simplified and developed
into a series of monoprints, contrasting the dark shapes of the
bats with the colours of sunsets or moonlight.
Images from this series have been used on the front cover of Bat
News and on the 2000 Chester Zoo Review.
