Aquariums and ponds are excellent
subjects for capturing a sense of three dimensional space. Moving
water distorts the shapes of the fish with changing light, reflections
and splashes adding to the pictorial interest.
Besides looking at local ponds Ive visited Kew Gardens, Stapeley
Water Gardens and The Blue Planet Aquarium. Being based at Chester
Zoo for two years gave me many opportunities to spend time drawing
in the Aquarium, recording colours and shapes to take back to my
studio as reference.
These images have been widely exhibited, and have proved to be
a popular subject for art buyers. Often hung as a series (four in
a square or in a line) they create the impression that you are staring
into an actual aquarium or pond.
Indigoart (www.indigoart.co.uk) recently commissioned large scale
images of two Aquariums and a Shoal of Fish for the Hilton Hotel
in Prague
