The brief for Islands in Danger
was to design three panels that represented birds, reptiles and the
breeding programme for the geographical area, without being too specific.Originally
they were to incorporate lettering but this was dropped, and information
boards were mounted below the panels.
I wrote the following statement with regard to the Spirit of the Jaguar
commission, 'The distinctive markings of the Jaguar were the initial
inspiration for these images. The coloured areas represent elements
of the environment. Together they symbolise the powerful presence
of the Jaguar in its natural surroundings.'
The finished works consisted of four panels (from artwork enlarged
to 1 metre square) each with a different coloured stripe and markings.
